Evolution of a Truth

It is the customary fate of new truths to begin as heresies and to end as superstitions. - T.H. Huxley

Added: because Truths are very often contextual in origin, said "Truths" are but, seeds for cultural wisdom itself.

TSA Agents: Citizens Without Manners.

With the many stories of citizen abuse and mannerlessness around the web about overzealous TSA (Transportation Security Administration) Agents at the airport, I'd have thought our Congress would put both agency practices and employee bering under some level of scrutiny . Possibly with a new administration, we'll find an open eye and ear to see what is happening and stop the public harrassment under the flag of "homeland security".

Groping teenage girls without reason, demanding citizens remove 'private' piercings in public, bullying the elderly -- it's enough to stop one American from flying. Even former Presidential candidate and U.S. Represenatative, Dr. Ron Paul expressed his own feelings last year.

Dr. Paul continues and describes that these new small-minded bullies with a badge : "employees have no special training, wisdom, intelligence, or experience whatsoever."

W's Homeland Security should be disbanded for mismanagement from the "get-go" and entirely restructured with intense scrutiny.

Here's the Chicago CBS Story that inspired this post.

Innovation is built upon the definition of new ideals.

So, if innovation is built upon the definition of new ideals, I suppose the key tool is effective communication. Without effective communication, no one will ever hear the good news.

Humans vs. Computers

Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid. Human beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant. Together they are powerful beyond imagination.

One Dollar Gamble

On my way out of the Wynnton Walgreen's this evening, two teenage girls stopped me. One of them asked if I had a dollar so she could buy some folders for school. The other girl just giggled.

I know it's July, yet I knew I had a dollar bill left in my front pocket from my baby food change, so I gave it to her.

Now, if the girl really needed folders enough to ask a total stranger for assistance, her prayers were answered by all that is good in me. But, if she thinks her swindle went swoosh, she's mistaken.

To Understand and Cope with a Growth Mind-Set

Quite often, Autumn and I discuss how we hope the Boy will "become" in his own life. From the very beginning, she hoped for him to simply "understand" the world around him. I thought this a gracious prayer and concur. What a great gift -- to understand.

I hope the Boy learns to cope. We all developed coping skills through out our lives. Some learned and others discovered. At an early age, through karate, Boy Scouts and studying the NASA space missions I first learned to open your mind to possibilities. Through skateboarding, I applied this "growth mind-set", and I discovered it made me a better thinker and problem-solver.

The psychology of "Born-Again Christianity" (which I share) is built upon the same premise: The epiphany that life circumstances can indeed change, evolve and grow once you're in control of your own destiny.

Here's "Unboxed", an article from the NYTimes that inspired this post.
Is it possible to shift from a fixed mind-set to a growth mind-set?

Absolutely, according to Ms. Dweck. But, “it’s not easy to just let go of something that has felt like your self for many years,” she writes. Still, she says, “nothing is better than seeing people find their way to things they value.”

So, I suspect, it is better to instill these values in someone as they develop rather than expect someone to come to this specific conclusion on their own. I suppose we'll just need to teach these lessons through living them... as a family.
